Master of Education, University of British Columbia (2021-2024)

Jade studied a Master of Education in Special Education with a specialization in High Ability under the supervision of Dr. Owen Lo. Throughout this degree, Jade achieved an average of 97%, studying:

  • Social-emotional interventions for gifted, talented, and highly able learners

Bachelor of Education, University of British Columbia

From 2018-2019, Jade completed a Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education at UBC with a specialization in Middle Years/Self-Regulated Learning. They taught their practicum in a local middle school and were awarded the Chitose Uchida Memorial Prize for outstanding academic achievement and the Emily Longworth Memorial Award for designing and implementing academic enrichment.

Jade completed courses in Middle Years Pedagogy: Inquiry; social studies curriculum and pedagogy; science curriculum and pedagogy; music curriculum and pedagogy, physical education curriculum and pedagogy; art curriculum and pedagogy; literacy and assessment; English language learners; teaching French; cultivating supportive school and classroom environments; general assessment; practicum; education, knowledge, and curriculum; education, school, and school institutions; community field experience (UBC botanical gardens); ethics and teaching; and development and exceptionality in the general classroom. Jade completed an inquiry project on trauma-informed practices in the general classroom, exploring outdoor learning interventions.

Bachelor of Fine Arts, University of British Columbia

Jade studied a UBC Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Psychology, Class 1 standing, from 2009-2015. After initially pursuing a psychology major, in their third year they added a double major with acceptance to the prestigious UBC Creative Writing program, which admits approximately 25 students annually. Jade also worked as a research assistant in several research labsHealth and Coping Lab, Social and Personality Lab, Cross-Cultural Psychiatry, and Clinical Psychologyas they contemplated an academic career in psychology. Jade was a staff writer for the undergraduate psychology journal Psyched! and an inaugural editor for the UBC Undergraduate Journal in Psychology. They won Dean’s List awards and Trek Excellence Scholarships for academic excellence, and was an Academic All-Canadian in recognition of high academic achievement as a student-athlete (UBC Softball Varsity Team). Jade studied creative writing with Canadian authors Steven Galloway, Dr. Ray Hsu, Maureen Medved, Amber Dawn, Kevin Chong, and Leah Abrahmson of the Abrahamson Singers.

Jade completed creative writing courses in original poetry, fiction, open concept writing, lyric and libretto writing, non-fiction, and writing for children. They studied fiction literature, contemporary literature, non-fiction memoir and British literature prior to the 19th century, academic writing, history of psychology, applied research, statistics, directed studies, psychology of memory, personality psychology, gender studies, cognitive psychology, sport and exercise psychology, clinical psychology, abnormal psychology, family studies, general sociology, biology, rocks and gems, and kinesiology (society and sport). They graduated with a 4.33 in their last senior years, the highest possible grade point average.

Secondary School

From Grade 8-10, Jade completed Explorations, a high ability, interdisciplinary-based academic program at McMath Secondary School in Richmond, B.C., focused on holistic learning strategies: group projects, community service, cross-grade collaboration, creativity, open endedness, and outdoor learning.

Subsequently, they completed AP English 11, AP English 12, and English Literature 12. A student of jazz musician Jeremey Hepner, Jade was also was a member of McMath’s award-winning jazz band and a original member of the 6-piece drumline that grew into a 50-piece marching band from Grade 8-12, playing at the Kwanis Festival, Jazz Nationals, Envision Jazz Festival (including finals), and almost a dozen parades including the Grey Cup Parade and the Santa Clause Parade. Jade is classically trained in Royal Conservatory of Music (piano), receiving scores of First Class Honours and First Class Honours with Distinction (highest honours) in musical theory.

Jade’s athletic education includes competitive community and school soccer and volleyball, Rep ‘A’ softball, competitive community soccer, and school basketball and badminton. They competed in Provincial Championships for four sports: basketball, soccer (club and school), volleyball (club and school), and softball. They are a two-time Softball Provincial Champion, Western Canadian Softball Championships bronze medalist, National Softball Championship participant, multiple Softball Provincials MVP, AAA Basketball Provincals MVP/Allstar, AA Soccer Provincials MVP, and AAA Soccer Provincials MVP.
